Energy polarity, grounding, and the human body

Updated: 2 days ago

There may be more to grounding than you realise.

Every living thing, including the Earth itself, has an electromagnetic field extending around it. The human body is no exception.

Your body is constantly communicating through electrical and chemical signals. Every heartbeat, thought, movement, sensation, and emotion relies on information moving through the nervous system with incredible speed and precision.

In many ways, the body functions like a living electrical system.

Many energetic traditions describe the human body as having a natural north-south orientation, much like the Earth itself. Traditionally, the upper body and head are considered more positively charged and expressive, while the lower body is considered more receptive, grounding, and restorative.

When we walk barefoot on the earth, many believe the body reconnects with the Earth’s natural magnetic orientation and electrical field. This is one reason grounding practices often help people feel calmer, clearer, heavier in the body, and more settled emotionally.

The boy moves through polarity

Life itself functions through polarity.

Open and close. Tense and release. Giving and receiving. Left and right. Masculine and feminine.

Traditional systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine describe these complementary relationships as yin and yang. In Western language, we often refer to them as feminine and masculine qualities.

Within the body, the right side and back are traditionally associated with more active, output-oriented qualities, while the left side and front are associated with more receptive, inward qualities.

Whether viewed symbolically, energetically, emotionally, or physically, these patterns can become useful ways of understanding how stress and balance are experienced in the body.

Stress changes energy flow

From a nervous system perspective, survival stress changes everything. When the body lives in chronic stress, the autonomic nervous system prioritises protection, vigilance, output, and survival over restoration and regulation. Many energetic traditions describe this as a disruption or imbalance in polarity and life-force flow.

People often report:

  • anxiety

  • tension

  • exhaustion

  • mental fog

  • emotional overwhelm

  • difficulty grounding or settling

Some traditions describe this as “reversed polarity,” where the body no longer feels able to regulate and ground efficiently. Whether viewed through the lens of energy medicine or nervous system science, the experience is often the same: The body no longer feels settled.

Grounding support regulation

Grounding is not simply a wellness trend. It is a way of helping the body reconnect with steadiness, rhythm, gravity, and safety.

Practices such as:

  • walking barefoot on natural ground

  • slowing the breath

  • hydration and mineral support

  • rest and nervous system regulation

  • reducing chronic stress and overstimulation

can all help support the body back toward balance.

Many people notice that as the nervous system regulates, they naturally begin to feel:

  • calmer

  • clearer

  • more connected

  • more emotionally steady

  • more present in the body.

A simple polarity support practice

One gentle practice used in polarity and energy work involves using the hands to support calming and regulation.

  1. Keep the fingers of both hands together rather than splayed.

  2. Place the left hand softly across the forehead.

  3. Place the right hand at the base of the skull.

  4. Take slow, gentle breaths and simply hold the position.

Many people notice a shift after a few moments:

  • a sigh

  • warmth

  • softening

  • clearer thinking

  • a sense of calm

The goal is not to force anything, but to allow the body to settle and reorganise.

Hydration matters way more than you think!

The body’s electrical system relies heavily on hydration, salts, and minerals to function properly. Electrolytes such as magnesium, sodium, potassium, and calcium help support:

  • nerve signalling

  • muscle function

  • stress regulation

  • energy production

When the body is depleted, people often feel more anxious, exhausted, foggy, tense, and dysregulated. Sometimes the body isn’t just stressed. Sometimes it’s under-resourced.

Grounding, hydration, minerals, rest, and nervous system regulation work beautifully together to help the body feel more settled, supported, and connected again.

Final thought...

Perhaps grounding is not really about escaping the body. Perhaps it is about finally feeling safe enough to fully return to it. And when the body feels safe, regulated, hydrated, connected, and supported… energy tends to flow differently.

When the body lives in chronic stress, the autonomic nervous system prioritises protection, vigilance, output, and survival over restoration and regulation. Many energetic traditions describe this as a disruption or imbalance in polarity and life-force flow.
